The Day I Died. Just Jack

1. Introduction

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt4rcr-vH40
The video I am analyzing is the day I died by just jack. It is directed by Ben & Joe Dempsey. The Genre is hip hop. Hip hop is normally revolved around rapping, DJing, sampling, scratching, beatboxing and breakdancing.

2. What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

In the music video a lot of the lyrics that are used match the visual for example “And as I sit down I look up, and you’re standing in the doorway sun at your back in my old brown dressing gown” they have a women standing in the doorway with a brown dressing gown on and James looking up at her. Also when he says “I get a memo from executive Joe saying Rob the gob is getting kicked out” and the visual is a gay with all his stuff in a box because he has been fired.

3. What is the relationship between music and visuals?

The video doesn’t really cut to the beat because the visual is quite slow although the beat isn’t really fast it is a bit faster than the visual. The solo instrumental bits aren’t illustrated in the video. Towards the end of the video the pace slows down even more and so does the video at this part the visual and music cuts together. This could be to show the audience that it isn’t a normal day.

4. Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?

The record company is looking to sell the track by using James Nesbitt as the actor in the video which they know a lot of people know him from Murphy’s Law and other shows that he has been in. We never see the artist in the video. The other video he has done is different to that one because in the video to starz in their eyes he is in the video and has a lot of close ups of him and it’s a fast track and video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9RunljdHow
The video presents the change of image.

5. Is there reference to the notion of looking?

The artist isnt on sexual display and neither are other people. The camerawork, costume and dance don’t show a sexualized display. There arent any references to screens within screens.

6. Are there intertextual references?

James Nesbitt who is an actor and has been in Murphys Law. They are used as the main actor in the video.

7. Is the music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based?

The video is mostly performance based, as well narrative based.

westlife unbreakable

My second music video I will be analysing is unbreakable by Westlife. The genre of the music is pop and adult contemporary. Pop music is a softer alternative to rock ‘n’ roll and later to rock music.

2. What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

In the video there aren’t many matches but the visual do kind of match but not with the lyrics.
Swept away on a wave of emotion. The visual for this is them sitting on the car and the waves going past the car.
And each time I look in your eyes. They have the two actors standing together and hugging and they look in to each others eyes.
This love is unbreakable, Through fire and flame, When all this is over, Our love still remains. The visual that they use for this the guy is in a car crash.

3. What is the relationship between music and visuals?

The video cuts to the beat because both the music and the visuals are slow. Solo instruments are illustrated by the video. The pace of the music doesn’t change so the video doesn’t change.

4. Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?

There are lots of close ups of the artists on an old billboard and it would change between them and the actors. The actors aren’t well known. They are planning on selling the track by making sure that the audiences see the band. Most of the previous videos they use they have them singing to the camera. The video doesn’t change there image.

5. Is there reference to the notion of
looking?

The video shows a couple in love and kissing and hugging. The camerawork shows that the couple is in love. But they aren’t really shown in a sexual way.

6. Are there intertextual references?

They don’t relate to any other music videos.

7. Is the music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based?

Narrative based and performance based.

genre

Craig Davis has three approachs to analysing music videos these are; Illustration, this is either a straightforward performance video or a simple narrative video, or possiablely a mixture of the both, which illustrates the lyrics and the music in a straightforward way. This could be called the decontation of the music video. Another one is the Amplification which is the conventions demonstrated by the music video or the creative director. But instead of just illustateing the lyrics of the sound it will ‘amplify’ both with the creative interpretation, unusual ideas and surrealistic approaches. But there is still a direct link to the song weither it is the beat or sound. The last one is Disjuncture this is also created by ‘auteur’ directors. The videos are completely abstract and don’t have any link to the music, lyrics and song tilte or artist.

MOD (Middle of the road)

This is a board term which is used for a number of music styles. It is not really a genre but it is mostly popualr as a radio format. Music that is put in the genre of MOD are usually the popular outlook but not cutting edge. It will usually habd a strong melody and a lot of use of vocal harmony. It will also involove orchestral instruments. Things that class music to be in the MOD genre are:

• Easy listening
• Traditional pop music of the pre-rock & roll era, or later recordings imitative of that style
• Orchestral ballads
• Songs from musical theater
• Smooth jazz
• Soft rock

A history of music video

Early History

Music and moving images have always gone together. In the 1920’s and 1030’s were always experimental films. In the 20s and 30s music was classed as a film genre. The ‘soundies’ was the early US for the jukebox. The European version of the soundies was the ‘scopitone’ for this they would put in the number in and it play a video that was for it. For that people would make their own films for the music and it would be shown in cafes and bars.

Scopitone

1960s promos

This was the time when rock and roll was big artist like The Beatles and Bob Dylan made there way through. Artist started to make little films for their music, most of the music was influenced by drugs.

1970s

This was the decade when top of the pops started to use music videos if the bands went on tour. The videos where filmed in a studio and only focused on the band or singer. The 1970s was still an experimental time for music.

1980s

Artist began to take their music videos seriously because of the changes in technology. Promos became a big thing in the early 80s.

1990s

The hype of music videos increased in the 1990s and money would be put aside to save up for top music video directors. The 1990s was a growth of the genre based channels. This was the time when black artists/ genres where becoming common. Magazine companies started to set up their own music channels for example Q, smash hits etc.

Codes and conventions of the music video

Professor Goodwin explains how you might be able to tell the difference between a music video and other types of media because of the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. As well as the relationship between the music and the visuals. The only thing about the music and visual is that it can be for any media text.

A lot of groups demand close ups of the man artist from their record company. The groups sometimes have their own star iconography which can become a main part of their performance.

Voyeurism is mostly used when looking at women. Voyeurism means privileged view e.g. the peeping tom.

There will likely be intertextual references to other music videos or films and TV shows.

Lyrics

Most lyrics tend to help establish a feeling/mood or a sense of a subject matter instead of offering a sound meeting.

Music

A music video will tend to make use of the tempo of the track. This is to drive the editor and this may highlight a part of the sound from the track.

Genre

Some music videos are hard to tell which genre they belong in and others are so much easier to tell. Some music videos only focus on one genre for example kerrang only focus of heavy metal and rock. Where as kiss manly focuses on hip hop. To tell the difference they might use mise-en-scene, themes, performances, camerawork and the editing styles.

Camerawork

The pace of the camerawork is important to a music video. This is because the camerawork will most probably accompany the movement of the performances.

Editing

The most common form of editing a music video is a fast cut montage, which makes many images impossible to view first time round. The videos that use a slow pace will most probably be trying to get the audience to establish a mood.
