A history of music video


Early History

Music and moving images have always gone together. In the 1920’s and 1030’s were always experimental films. In the 20s and 30s music was classed as a film genre. The ‘soundies’ was the early US for the jukebox. The European version of the soundies was the ‘scopitone’ for this they would put in the number in and it play a video that was for it. For that people would make their own films for the music and it would be shown in cafes and bars.

1960s promos

This was the time when rock and roll was big artist like The Beatles and Bob Dylan made there way through. Artist started to make little films for their music, most of the music was influenced by drugs.

1970s

This was the decade when top of the pops started to use music videos if the bands went on tour. The videos where filmed in a studio and only focused on the band or singer. The 1970s was still an experimental time for music.

1980s

Artist began to take their music videos seriously because of the changes in technology. Promos became a big thing in the early 80s.

1990s

The hype of music videos increased in the 1990s and money would be put aside to save up for top music video directors. The 1990s was a growth of the genre based channels. This was the time when black artists/ genres where becoming common. Magazine companies started to set up their own music channels for example Q, smash hits etc.
