1. Introduction
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt4rcr-vH40
The video I am analyzing is the day I died by just jack. It is directed by Ben & Joe Dempsey. The Genre is hip hop. Hip hop is normally revolved around rapping, DJing, sampling, scratching, beatboxing and breakdancing.
2. What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
In the music video a lot of the lyrics that are used match the visual for example “And as I sit down I look up, and you’re standing in the doorway sun at your back in my old brown dressing gown” they have a women standing in the doorway with a brown dressing gown on and James looking up at her. Also when he says “I get a memo from executive Joe saying Rob the gob is getting kicked out” and the visual is a gay with all his stuff in a box because he has been fired.
3. What is the relationship between music and visuals?
The video doesn’t really cut to the beat because the visual is quite slow although the beat isn’t really fast it is a bit faster than the visual. The solo instrumental bits aren’t illustrated in the video. Towards the end of the video the pace slows down even more and so does the video at this part the visual and music cuts together. This could be to show the audience that it isn’t a normal day.
4. Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs?
The record company is looking to sell the track by using James Nesbitt as the actor in the video which they know a lot of people know him from Murphy’s Law and other shows that he has been in. We never see the artist in the video. The other video he has done is different to that one because in the video to starz in their eyes he is in the video and has a lot of close ups of him and it’s a fast track and video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9RunljdHow
The video presents the change of image.
5. Is there reference to the notion of looking?
The artist isnt on sexual display and neither are other people. The camerawork, costume and dance don’t show a sexualized display. There arent any references to screens within screens.
6. Are there intertextual references?
James Nesbitt who is an actor and has been in Murphys Law. They are used as the main actor in the video.
7. Is the music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept-based?
The video is mostly performance based, as well narrative based.
