Craig Davis has three approachs to analysing music videos these are; Illustration, this is either a straightforward performance video or a simple narrative video, or possiablely a mixture of the both, which illustrates the lyrics and the music in a straightforward way. This could be called the decontation of the music video. Another one is the Amplification which is the conventions demonstrated by the music video or the creative director. But instead of just illustateing the lyrics of the sound it will ‘amplify’ both with the creative interpretation, unusual ideas and surrealistic approaches. But there is still a direct link to the song weither it is the beat or sound. The last one is Disjuncture this is also created by ‘auteur’ directors. The videos are completely abstract and don’t have any link to the music, lyrics and song tilte or artist.


MOD (Middle of the road)

This is a board term which is used for a number of music styles. It is not really a genre but it is mostly popualr as a radio format. Music that is put in the genre of MOD are usually the popular outlook but not cutting edge. It will usually habd a strong melody and a lot of use of vocal harmony. It will also involove orchestral instruments. Things that class music to be in the MOD genre are:

• Easy listening
• Traditional pop music of the pre-rock & roll era, or later recordings imitative of that style
• Orchestral ballads
• Songs from musical theater
• Smooth jazz
• Soft rock

Hip Hop

Hip hop is a music genre and cultur movement which developed in New York City during 1970 mostly among African Americansn Hispanic and latino Americans. Rapping, djing, graffiti writing and breakdancing are the four main elements to Hip Hop. Other elemnts arebeatboxing, hip hop fashion and slang.

Rock

Rock is a popular genre that developed during and after the 1960s, but it also have roots in the 1940s and 1950s rock and roll. Here is the history of Rock

Pop Music
This has a noticeable rhythmic element, melodies, a mainstream style and a conventional structure. The world Pop Music was first used in 1926 as in having popular appeal. But in the 1950s people used it as a music genre which was for music that was a lighter alernation of rock and roll.

Dance music
This can be either a whole musical or a part of a larger musical arrangement. The major categories are live dance music and recorded dance music. In the 1981 electronics dance music was developing which took place at discos. This was made using electronics. The music is usually played in nightclubs, radio stations, shows and raves.

Rhythm and Blues

This is also known as R&B. It was originally created by African Americans in the lates 1940s and early 1950s. in 1960s the term R&B refered to a music style which developed from and incorporated electric blues as well as gospel and soul music. Since the 1990s contemporary R&B mainly refers to a modern version of soul and funk-influenced pop music.
